We're heading up to the I-90 to Detroit, where rock n roll never forgets. This is the early goings of the Overlake fall Fall tour! Follow that hashtag for pictures of bands you most likely don't know at clubs you've most likely never been to!
This time around, we're bringing some helpers to generally keep us sane, but also do some driving and merchandising. On this initial leg is my ol' buddy, Jake Luckey. Having him along has already provided a more interesting trip. We spent some time in the bucolic environs of Ashland, Ohio, following our show at the Stone Tavern in Kent, staying at his uncle's spread amid rows of corn, patches of peas, loose gravel roads, and 2 super cute kittens. Then, we went a few minutes away to his mom's farm, visiting some chickens, turkeys, pigs, and 2 dogs. A much-needed fresh-air respite from the rock club circuit.
I've gotten ahead of myself. Our first gig was in Lancaster, Pa., which, unbeknownst to me, is more tha...
We've left the big states and the 8-hour drives behind at long last! We've left the torrential rain and tornado warnings of New Orleans and are making our way north to Memphis, a great town with lots of people we dig. But, what's happened since Tucson...?
DRIVING. We left the Hotel Congress, which we found out was haunted. Or, rather, that Tom and Stacy's initial room was haunted. It was dubbed the suicide room for harrowing reasons. Decades ago, a woman shot herself in the head in the bathroom of room 242 and, apparently, you can still see a bullet hole in the closet. When Tom and Stacy checked in, none of the power worked—the only room in the hotel with such an issue. Upon changing rooms, they were informed of that room's grisly history.
Anyway, we motored our way to Las Cruces, NM, for the night. We unfortunately didn't get to spend any time in the town (apologies to L.A. Bry!); we checked into our rooms, ate dinner, and passed out. The next day, we'd have a 9+-hour rid...
Hello friends... Your humble narrator, Nick, is currently busy making the world a more tolerable place through the art of grammar correction... He's fighting the good fight, as it were, so I've been tasked to sum up week two for you... I'm not as swift with my wordage, so I'll keep it brief...
Saturday 4/22, Seattle... Or Ballard, really... Lovely neighborhood... We played at this place called Substation... It was a decent show, and we got to hang with a bunch of friends from back home who have begun relocating here over the past few years or so... Very nice to see some old (or not so old) faces... There was no show on Sunday, so we were able to break apart and do our own things for a while, do some exploring and what not... The van needed some love, so we gave it some... I ran off to Capitol Hill for brunch with Jared and Preetma from Vomitface, then reconvened with Lysa and Nick at our friend Carolynn's birthday party at her home in West Seattle... We all sort of love it out here, i...
Greetings from Salem, OR, our new favorite town. Where did I leave you...?
Ah yes, on Interstate 80 in Nebraska. Lots has happened. We slogged our way through the Midwest toward Denver to play a house party near Columbine. Yikes, I know. Fear not, the locals have gotten over it. A Wednesday night house party on the eve of 4/20 in Denver. This would either be super fun or a super bust. Turns out, it was the former. Ty, our house show organizer and one-half of the mind-blowing duo, Ghostpulse, greeted us warmly and set up a radically eclectic event and, unexpectedly, one of the best-sounding rooms of the tour so far. It being a house party and all, Lysa and I took a trip to the local booze purveyor to stock up on lubricants for the evening.
My #idrinkecono special of the night was Lost Lakes Beer. So good, I barely noticed that I damn near finished a 12-pack by the end of the evening. Whoops.
Grim Temple, a blistering doom metal trio featuring Ty's roommates, kicked off the night, melting e...
Greetings from Nebraska (I think), somewhere on Interstate 80! We've just had a much-needed caffeine stop. My current regimen: coffee, 2 Throwback Mountain Dews. So, we'll probably get to Denver in 45 minutes once I take the wheel.
This is Day 4 of our 4-week sprightly jaunt across the United States of Anxiety! We've packed a whole lotta ups and downs in these 4 days. Tour got off to an auspicious start with a wild show in Columbus in front of many pajama-clad Ohio Staters. We met our old friend "Magic" Mike Casey and a new friend, Lydia Loveless. We shredded the pajama pants off those college kids in an unhinged set. We were feeling good til I went out to the van and discovered some local degenerate had helped themselves to my and Lysa's luggage. ENJOY MY WFMU SHIRTS, MOTHERFUCKER. Total bummer, but luckily our gear was inside the venue. I've resolved to sleep with my drum cases every night, one way or another. I'm one step away from sleeping INSIDE them.
This ain’t no fake news, this ain’t no alt facts, this ain’t no fooling around: We have exciting updates!
Firstly, we are quite pleased and proud to announce that we have signed to Bar/None Records! We’re very stoked to be part of this long running, legendary, and local label. Thanks to Glenn and Mark at Bar/None, and Emmy at Rhyme & Reason Records, for their belief in us and hard work on our behalf.
Our first release on Bar/None will be our second LP, Fall. Deftly recorded by the brilliant Tom Beaujour at Nuthouse Recording, Fall will be available on May 12 for your turntable, CD player, and digital media device! Fall consists of 8 new tunes, some of which you may recognize if you’ve seen us live (and you have seen us live, haven’t you??). It builds on the sonic landscapes from our debut record, Sighs, while adding a fresh palate of color, lyricism, and depth. Fall is also the first Overlake recording to feature now-not-so-new drummer, Nick (who is also me, the person writing this. I di...
Well, for once, I'm not nodding off in the passenger seat, fighting T-Mobile wi-fi, or reading back issues of The New Yorker. So, here it is, back by popular demand (2 people): Tour Blog. Or, Travelblogue, if you prefer.
Well, what's happened in the 4 days since Raleigh? We've been some places, played some gigs, met some people, and ate terribly. Here's the Happy Recap:
Day 3: Athens, Ga.
Oh, Athens, we hated to leave ye. What a truly awesome night last night. Though our gig had some competition around town, we had a pretty decent turnout for the opening slot. Flicker Bar is a great spot, staffed with some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet (shout out to JoJo the bartender).
Speaking of super nice people, John Ferguson and Rob Schneider of Spaceflyte (and, of course, Apples in Stereo) are as sweet as their harmonies. They gave us some generous and effusive praise for our songs, our sound, Tom’s guitar work, and my and Lysa’s “solid block of o...
I probably should’ve started this on Day 1, but alas, I’m perpetually on rock ‘n’ roll time. Hello, readers. Nick the drummer here. I’ll be attempting to blog this 12-day November jaunt from the road (Wi-Fi willing).
We’re currently rolling down a very cloud, occasionally rainy, 85 South corridor en route to Athens, Ga., for tonight’s gig at Flicker Bar with Sound of Ceres and Spaceflyte (featuring members of Apples in Stereo). We made the first of probably many Waffle House stops, a welcome respite from a diet of Lays, Inc. products thus far.
Last week, we got the tremendous news that we would be opening for one of our heroes, that being the band Swervedriver. It goes without saying that we are beside ourselves! Tickets are available through the Bowery website here. If you can't make this show, we are opening for another amazing talent at Mercury Lounge on Friday, September 11, 2015: Kathryn Calder. You may know her from the band New Pornographers; she is a kick-ass solo artist as well. Tickets for that show are available here. Both artists released new albums this spring, and both are phenomenal. We hope you will check them out.
Speaking of releases.....we don't have an exact date yet, BUT we can tell you it will be this fall, AND.. as a special special special treat, we will be selling limited edition pre-release T-Shirts with download card at both of these shows!!
SO.. if you're in the NYC area this weekend or next, come on out, have some fun, grab a t-shirt and get a couple of new tunes from us! Hope to see y...
